PeakRewards Water Heater Program

Program Notice

What is it?

The PeakRewards Water Heater program is designed by BGE to help ease the "peak" demand for electricity in the Mid-Atlantic region. It’s part of the BGE Smart Energy Savers Program, which helps you conserve energy, save money and protect the environment.

FAQs

How does it work?

BGE residential customers with electric water heaters in good working order can choose to have a switch installed. The switches are designed to cycle off 100% of the electricity to your water heater during periods of peak electric demand.

Any water already heated by the tank should remain hot. However, if the water in the tank is used up during an event, new water will not be heated until the cycling event is over.

What do I get?

  • Savings. When you participate in the PeakRewards Water Heater program, you will receive combined credits and a bonus totaling $50 in your first year. Bill credits of $6.25 for four months ($25) and matching bonus $6.25 for four months ($25) will be reflected in your November, December, January and February bills. You will continue to receive $25 a year for each year you participate.
  • More Savings. Eight months of bill credits with PeakRewards A/C & Water Heater programs – up to $125/year if you enroll in both programs.
  • Options. You can override up to four non-emergency cycling events each year – two overrides from June-September and two from October-May.
  • Online Access. This new feature will allow you to override non-emergency cycling events from anywhere you have access to a web browser.
  • Advanced Technology. Smart Switch professionally installed at your home.

How does it help?

Participation in PeakRewards is one way we can work together to help protect our environment and reduce our carbon footprint by:

  • Reducing the need for additional power generation plants.
  • Reducing the emissions from current and future power plants.
  • Reducing the need for additional electric delivery infrastructure such as electric transmission and distribution lines.
  • Easing the burden on Maryland's electricity delivery system as our state's electricity demands continue to grow.
  • Aligning with the state's EmPOWER Maryland goals.
